Couldn't help you..... don't know much about Chrislands. $200 is a lot of money when you can spend $40 a month on Amazon.

After reading a few posts in this area I've registered to list my books on booksupply.org but I can't figure out what the next step is to upload books here via AOB. I'm assuming I add booksupply.org as a custom venue and I request an ftp account? Anyone have any advice here?

Since you unearthed this old thread, I thought I'd nose around the site again.

They are very unclear about their fees. In one place they say they charge 10%, in another $1 - which is it?

Not that I'm sure it really matters. I pulled up the visitor stats for the site and they're abysmal. There are months last summer where they had NO visitors! Yikes! Here's the link:

http://www.statsaholic.com/booksupply.org

At random I pulled up one of their "stores" (how can it be a store if the seller's name doesn't appear anywhere on the page? Just the Book Supply logo is present) and copied an ISBN from a listing there. I pasted it in both Google Search and Yahoo. Guess what didn't show up? That seller's listing. On either search.

So if the search engines aren't finding the listings, how effective can this site be?

Sounds like you're underway getting this set up (by the way - will their sales, if there are any, get pushed back into AOB?) so please post if this turns into a successful venture for you. From the outside looking in, it doesn't seem too hopeful. I hope for your sake I'm wrong.

I'm thinking there isn't any purpose in BookSupply. It was easy enough to get started but it's been a week since I requested an ftp account and I've heard nothing.

On the otherhand, I couldn't figure out where to sign up with Barnes & Noble and I emailed them and then found the link to the application and filled it out. They emailed me the next morning to tell me that though I was anxious to get started they had gotten my application and would be checking me out. Still haven't heard back from them yet either though. Wonder if that is usual?

I tried booksupply.org and was very unhappy.  It might have been me but I found the site very limited.  I have also tried White Oak and found them limited also.  I am now using an Ebay ProStore and even they don't do everything I would want...but they are MUCH MUCH more user friendly and offer a lot more in the way of search engine optimization and site design.  I pay $20 a month for the prostore which is just slightly higher than the others. (I think they were $8).  It has been worth it, in my opinion.

I have been on Booksupply for a good long while and I don't think I have ever sold 1 thing there.  I am White Oak, and like them, I refer the sales there myself so far.  Can't say about Chrislands.

That's not unusual at all to wait to hear back from B&N. If it's longer than a week or two, though, it wouldn't hurt to drop them a friendly e-mail and remind them you're still waiting for approval.

Depends on what you want. The setup fee is a one time charge for a website with your own URL, a shopping cart, publishing of ALL items to a static page searchable by Google and other search engines, free Google (froogle) Feed of your items, a file for submitting your inventory to the free sites http://www.DealOz.com and http://www.Shopping.com. etc., etc., etc.

In addition you can have your books searchable by http://www.BookFinder.com and http://www.viaLibri.net for a small additional monthly fee plus very small commission. You can also set up the site here on AoB as a custom venue.

We have been with Chrislands for some years - probably since about six months after we started in Oct 2001. The site was ready to go within a few days and we started selling books on site within the first several weeks. The site paid back the initial setup [it was less than the present $199.99 then but I don't remember exactly how much] and was paying for itself within several months. It has never cost us money out of pocket since the first several months and, at present, generally outsells either Abe or Alibris or both and sometimes even both combined. It has been the site where we have had our largest sales and believe me, it is very nice not to have to pay a commission on the higher priced books.

Of course, I did quite a bit of work on the site and tried to get our name known, see our site map page for example
http://www.whiteunicornbooks.com/home/wu-sitemap
We submitted to DMOZ and all the other free sites including Google. I've added quite a bit of content to the site and continue to do so on a much more reduced schedule. At one time we we a 5 'page rank' on Google and I believe flirted with a six back before, several years ago, there was a big change and 'everyone' lost one rank. We are now a 4. I could do more and the site would probably benefit, but I get lazy or just sort of wander off and do something else.

Anyway, just my 2
