Abebooks
Oct 25th, 2005 at 12:24am

How many books should one have in inventory to start  listing on Abebooks.com? I saw the previous threads where Alibris is preffered over abebooks, but at what point does it make sense to list on Abe. The monthly fee seem pretty high for bookseller with a small inventory.

Thanks,
Fallon

I've never been a big fan of Abe so I'm rather biased. We get a fair amount of business with Alibris to complement our other sales, and find it more friendly for booksellers.

We have 22,000 books on ABE and make about 5-6 sales a day on ABE, and we're making money....
Although the return on ABEbooks is less than the other venues we sell on.

I made up an Excel spreadsheet to do an analysis of ABE (and the other major selling sites: Alibris, Biblio, Valore, Amazon,etc...) to see whether it was worth listing...

There are a lot of variables.... average sale price of your books, how many sales you expect per day/month, total number of books in your inventory, how much you pay for your books....etc...

I can send you the spreadsheet if you like. You plug in the variables, and the spreadsheet calculates Gross Income, Net Income, and Profit Margin % by Venue.

(Some restrictions apply. Your mileage may vary. Chance of winning 1 in 3,500,000. )

Thanks Pagemaster. Took a look at your spreadsheet again (had gotten it awhile back). Interesting.
Think I'll pass on Abe. Just can't justify it with the monthly fee, and already selling strong on Amazon and Alibris.
